Homeowners Design Center
As an entrepreneur, you have to be able to react to the situation at hand and make the best of it so that you’re still on top and you’re still accomplishing what you need to do.
Founded in 1969, Homeowners Design Center is a locally owned family business that offers cabinets, counters, flooring, and window coverings, as well as design services. Owner Lori Matsushige and her team take pride in partnering with homeowners, designers, contractors and architects to complete quality residential and commercial construction projects throughout Hawaii.
I would suggest talking to your employees, get to know them, find out what makes them tick. If some people are more family oriented, have a family picnic. Get people together and find out what they need.
Have a sit down with them and say, “Hey, what are we doing right?” and “What can we do better?”
Some of the things that I ask for myself when looking for a bank are: “What can they do for me? How responsive are they to my needs? Can they answer all the questions that I have?” When you start out as an entrepreneur, you always have questions. You want your banker to be knowledgeable, to respond quickly, and to give you really good advice when you need it.
During the day, everyone gets busy. It’s a good idea to take time first thing in the morning to plan the major things you need to accomplish. As an entrepreneur, you constantly go through change and a lot of interruptions, and you have to be fast on your feet.
The people. I walk into the bank and they know who I am, they know what I need. They are so friendly and so helpful. If I need a loan for anything, I can give them a call and they’ll be responsive and let me know what I need to do. They make it so much easier for me.
One specific way the bank really helped me was when they gave us a loan for photovoltaic on our building. It helped us cut our costs. They put the loan together in a couple of weeks. We got all our tax credits for the photovoltaic, and we applied that great savings to pay back the loan. It was paid off in three years.
